It is apparent that a single, palpable heartbeat is being generated from the international community when the immediate needs of earthquake survivors are considered. Acts of kindness and illustrations of human goodness have been bountiful in reactions to Haiti’s devastated infrastructure and destruction of lives. As the story of Haiti disappears from media headlines, the international community is still left with one daunting question: what will the future hold for the people of Haiti? To help determine its future, Sonje Ayiti, urges the international community to stand tall in solidarity not just for these initial relief efforts, but to tower steadfastly for Haiti in REBUILDING and RESTORATION. Our challenge is for the international community to be more than “momentary monetary donors”, but enduring guardians of life and social justice. Now, we urge the international community to show a sustained COMMITMENT to these processes. Although financial resources are needed in Haiti, there are many crucial factors necessary for the Haitian people to HEAL from the chronic and acute wounds sustained from bitter harshness of oppression. Above all, the Haitian people are in need of a supportive community who are willing to build RELATIONSHIPS with them in the name of LOVE and not out of sympathy. Only through these rehabilitative relationships can my Haitian brothers and sisters truly be EMPOWERED. Although a large portion of the population lives in impoverished circumstances, they are far from “poor”. Sonje Ayiti reminds the international community that the Haitian people are deeply COURAGEOUS and have shown a RESILIENCY of biblical proportions. The long-term outcomes in Haiti will not only reflect the resolve of the Haitian people, but also shine a light on the barometer of humanity amongst the international community.
